After a terrific 72 hours, with thousands of Blue Jays fans from Western Canada experiencing the annual Seattle baseball experience, this year, watching their Blue Jays win two of three exciting games against the Mariners, a team basically built in the Jays mirror image, similar strengths and weaknesses, fans are left to ponder the direction Jays management will take in the next three weeks.
Leading to the trade deadline, will the Jays be sellers, moving expiring contracts of soon-to-be-free-agents like LHP Yusei Kikuchi, DH Justin Turner, C Danny Jansen, RHP Yimi Garcia and RHP Trevor Richards, or will they attempt to hang on and at least claw their way back to .500 as a way to sell this team during the next off-season, promising fans a few reloads and another avenue to contending. We know they will not be buyers. But, with the $360-million stadium renos and the new private clubs at Rogers Centre, they have painted themselves into a “no-rebuild” corner of expensive inventory and a disgruntled fanbase.
Scotty Mac and I explain from personal experience whet makes that Seattle weekend so special for fans and players. We discuss the Vlad Guerrero Jr. all-star selection and who we think should be the respective AL and NL starting pitchers in Arlington next Tuesday. Also, a tribute to former Jays’ grinder, CF Kevin Pillar, who last week reached his 10-years of major-league service, which maxes him out on the lucrative MLB pension plan. Still contributing for the Angels, in Anaheim, Scott and I share memories of why Pillar is special.
