Griff's Baseball Conversation with Buck Martinez
Wide ranging discussion with Blue Jays iconic broadcaster
My guest on Griff’s Baseball Conversation is ever-resilient Blue Jays broadcaster, Buck Martinez. Going strong and ready for another season, Buck goes deep regarding his various and often complex relationships with … Ernie Whitt, Bobby Cox, former Jays teammates, Chris Berman and Cal Ripken’s MLB-saving and sports Emmy Award winning moment. Buck offers his thoughts on the Toronto media, his time as Jays manager, in 2001-02 and knowing he was going to be fired, his work-ethic and interactions and detailed preparation with different partners in the booth, his respect and genuine affection for the fan base across Canada, even more-so after the welcome back they gave him after his battle with cancer. The thread that runs through this conversation is the reliance on and support of his wife of 50 years, Arlene, his trusted advisor and guiding light. Buck is scheduled back in the booth again in 2025, for 100 games on Sportsnet. His sincerity and love of the game shine through.
Only just had a chance to listen to this and what a fantastic conversation. Buck is 76? Amazing how sharp and youthful he is. Truly a nice guy. However my favourite line was yours about Ken Macha's understandably short biography.
