A look at this week’s Power Rankings, shows the National League pulling away in inter-league play, at plus-18 over the AL. The six divisions and the 5-team standings based on won-lost outside their divisions (through July 17) are as follows: 1-AL East +59 … 2-NL East +20 … 3-NL West +13 … 4-NL Central minus-12 … 5-AL West minus-13 … 6-AL Central minus-67.
Major League Baseball remains the most evenly balanced of major North American pro sports, from top-to-bottom of the standings. Power Rankings can change quickly. How balanced? Through Tuesday, there were just three teams with win-percentage over .600, four teams at or under the .400 mark and an amazing 23 teams in the middle range at .401-.600.
What happens at the trade deadline? Buyers? Sellers? Consider that through July 18, 19 of 30 MLB teams were within eight games of the division lead or a wildcard spot.
Numbers in parentheses are from Edition 10 power rankings.
