Griff: Do you have an inkling as to the level of divide between Vlad and the team. If I ignore deferrals, which should be valued under Present Value principles (and I’m not going to debate what interest rate should be used in such a calculation), I have a sense that Jays were willing to pony up roughly $500MM over 12 years and he wanted $700MM over 14 years.

The divide is large, but can be made up depending on ownership, acceptance of deferrals and creative accounting methods. The Catch 22 is that if Vlad has a great year his price goes up and if he struggles they may not touch their current offer.

Quite frankly puts an entire damper on the season and has to be quite a downer for the other players seeing how this team has treated its greatest asset.

Triple Ooof. And another oooof for good measure. Like you, I believe this failure to sign him before Spring Training a mistake.

I think this outcome isn't a surprise for the reason you mention: the Jays metric-based valuation of Vlad just does not line up with whatever $$$ he wanted and it is just not mentally possible for them to budge on that and they also do not seem to value the human or fan element in this.

I also think Vlad wanted to test free agency and can see that the future of the team is not bright.

What a crappy situation we're in now. If we play well enough to make the playoffs, we're unlikely to sell at the trade deadline and then will likely lose Vlad for nothing. If we are mediocre, things are going to get ugly fast. Very ugly.

I wonder how the fickle fan base will treat Vlad this year - cheers or jeers?

This is a huge fail on the part of the Front Office.

Although maybe Vlad was just asking for something ridiculous?

I don't believe Vladdy ever intended on signing with the Jays.If I'm not mistaken, he will be an Atlanta Brace next year.Alex always wanted him and will pay whatever silly price he asks.
